Everything You Need to Know: Electrolysis Hair Removal

How Does Electrolysis Hair Removal Work?

What is Electrolysis Hair Removal?

Electrolysis is the method of removing individual hairs from the face or body. Today’s electrolysis devices destroy the growth center of the hair with chemical or heat energy. After a very fine probe is inserted into the hair follicle, essentially electrocuting the hair follicle and then gently removed with tweezers. Gently removed…NOT forcibly pulled. Keep in mind that electrolysis is a type of hair removal technique that should always be administered by a highly skilled technician, dermatologist, or aesthetician.

FUN FACT: Electrolysis is the only process backed by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a permanent solution.

For the record, once again…Laser hair removal is hair reduction and/or thinning and NOT a permanent solution but it is in fact a good option … if you’re the right candidate. If laser hair removal isn’t the cards for you then electrolysis is truly your best option.

Why do I have so much hair, Damn it?!

Hair growth and type is not only heredity but also related to hormone levels. Also, pregnancy, some drugs, temporary methods of hair removal, and illnesses can stimulate hair growth. I was one hairy bi*ch and my hair removal journey took a good 10 years of dedication! But it was sooo worth it.

I guess I was wise beyond my years because I never messed with waxing, threading, or shaving. I took a nosedive right into electrolysis in 1997 and continued it until I was a sphinx! I’m in a fully committed relationship with electrolysis above the neck which includes my eyebrows, upper lip, chin, jawline, cheeks, sideburns, you name it! The neck below is all laser hair removal. I would never fu*k with laser on my face knowing I’m a brown girl. It’s just not worth the risk with all the So Called certified half-ass technicians out there.

Is it painful?

I’m the absolute worst person to ask because needles don’t scare or pain me. Cause I kinda like them. While everyone has a different pain threshold it only feels like a tiny pinch, in all honesty. But with today’s method, it’s really not painful. If you’re uncomfortable your doctor can prescribe a topical numbing cream that you apply 30-45 minutes prior to your appointment and you’re all set.

How many sessions does it take?

The total number of sessions needed to remove hair permanently depends on the person. From my experience, I was going once a week or every other week for 1hr and 2hr sessions per visit. The key thing is patience because hair grows in different stages: growing, resting, and shedding. Because all of the hair isn’t on the same stage at any given time is the reason for what feels like never-ending sessions. I wanted that shit gone so I was dedicated, more dedicated to my hair than my ex-husband but I don’t have commitment issues. Lol

How much does it cost?

We all know it…everything in New York City costs more. Period. If you want cheaper, find someone in a smaller town. On average per session could cost you around $125- $175 per hour in my experience.

Again, electrolysis isn’t an immediate fix, but its a great permanent hair removal option that works for me and is a method I personally would recommend.
